Where can you go TODAY to buy an Extra-Large Sheitel?

BY: Sarah.

I got married in the last year, and one of the things I was most excited about was wearing a sheitel. Not only because it’s a mitzvah, but because I was someone who had spent a lot of time and money on my hair: weekly blowouts, monthly cuts and color. I couldn’t wait to stop wasting this time and money and instead having a sheitel that would always look beautiful whenever I put it on.

When I went to my first sheitel macher, I was surprised to learn just how difficult it would prove to be for me to buy a wig, as my head is a XL! I always knew I had a large head as whenever I wore a baseball hat, I had to leave the back part completely unbuttoned. But I never thought much about my head size until I went to try on my first sheitel.

The sheitel macher put on my head a large wig that was too tight. She said she could “extend” the cap by sewing fabric into key parts to enlarge it. Although she did do this, and my cap is now comfortable, it took an extra week to get the sheitel as she needed time to work on it.

Wouldn’t it be much easier if us women with larger heads could just walk into a sheitel salon and purchase an XL wig today and walk out? No adjustments needed? That’s why I wrote this blog post: to help others, who like me, have suffered not being able to find the right sized sheitel.

Below is a list of 4 companies in Brooklyn and Long Island where you can go TODAY to buy a wig with an XL cap. One caveat: even though they stock XL wigs, call ahead! Make sure they have your color/style in stock because wig companies have the fewest pieces in XL so you don’t want to waste time.

I do hope one day more companies will carry the larger sizes (XL, XXL, and XXXL) so that those of us with larger heads will have an easier time buying wigs!

First, A Word of Caution
Many wig companies will tell you they sell XL sheitels but the fact is, you can’t buy an XL from them today. Why? Because they only carry in their salon wigs with S, M, and L caps. They may have an XL or XXL cap laying around, but in order for you to use their XL wig cap you have to do one of two things:

1. You have to do a wig transfer, namely find a L wig and have the hair on it transferred to an XL by removing the wefts from the L cap and resewing it into the XL cap. Takes usually a week and they make you pay in advance for the sheitel before you see it finished. Plus, it costs more, as usually they have to add wefts to the larger size cap. Not an ideal option in my opinion as you really don’t know how it will look in the end (and what the damage done is by unsewing and resewing the wig). The wig company will tell you they do it all the time, it’s no big deal, but sheitels are fragile and the more you tamper with them, the less durable they are.

2. Order from the factory a custom XL cap-sized sheitel. This will be XL but could take anywhere from 6-12 weeks for you to get it.

They can also order you XL, XXL, and XXXL. What’s great about when you place a special order with them (as opposed to virtually every other wig company I’ve encountered) is that although you give a small deposit when you do a special order, if when the order arrives you’re not interested in the sheitels, you get a full refund. You don’t have to take any of the wigs that you order. (In contrast to Gali’s, every other sheitel company makes you pay in full if you special order a larger size; if when the wigs arrive you don’t want them, with other companies, you’re stuck and have to buy them.) Note however than their special orders take 3 months to arrive!

Gali’s also has a generous wig warranty. Within the first week, if you return your sheitel, you get your full money back (minus a 10% restocking fee). Gali’s also guarantees their sheitels for 6 months so if there is any issue at all, they will fix the hair or replace the wig at no additional charge.

Buy a Large Sheitel and Extend It with Shani

Most wig companies sell sheitels with cap size medium; some sell small, medium, and large. If you do find a size large sheitel in a color/length/style that you like, you can have someone enlarge it by opening the cap and adding more material to it.

Some companies that sell large wigs have a woman like this on staff. But in case you find a large sheitel and they don’t have such a staff member, contact Shani in Crown Heights who specializes in this:
